Hiring Tips

A hospitality job board should do more than provide a place to post a position and collect applications.
Mis en Place syndicates job posts for independent restaurants every day, and I've helped design and build technology around the parts of hiring that traditional job boards leave employers to manage themselves.
Posting a job is easy. Managing everything that happens afterward? Not so much.
Technology has changed how candidates search, compare opportunities, apply, and communicate with employers, which I explored in Technology Changed Hiring.
Meanwhile, employers need to review applicants, communicate with candidates, coordinate interviews, and keep track of where everyone stands.
Too much of that work happens outside the job board or through systems employers piece together themselves, often from their cell phones. For restaurant operators, time is already in short supply.
We've now launched the Mis en Place Job Board, with a freemium model that lets employers post up to three jobs per month at no charge. Not a trial. Free.
But this isn't a one-and-done, build-it-and-walk-away project.
My focus remains on improving the features and structure that make hiring easier to manage.
I recently asked restaurant job seekers what they want from a job board. Employers deserve the same opportunity to tell us what would make the process work better from their side.
I want to know what restaurant and hospitality employers need from a job board.
I want a hospitality job board to help employers manage what happens after someone applies, with practical applicant-tracking tools and a hiring process that doesn't require a collection of disconnected systems.
Job boards don't need to be so expensive.
When I recruit for a position, I need to know which applicants I've reviewed, whom I want to contact, who responded, who's scheduled for an interview, and where each candidate stands.
Keeping that information in a spreadsheet, notes on a cell phone, or relying on memory makes hiring unnecessarily difficult.
Ideally, employers should be able to move applicants forward, communicate, coordinate interviews, and understand what happens next without creating another process around the job board.
For an independent restaurant, whether or not it has a dedicated HR department, that structure matters.
And it starts before applications arrive. Our Restaurant Job Post Checklist outlines what employers should define before a position goes live.
The question is: How much of the hiring process should your job board help you manage?
Your hiring process may uncover problems I haven't encountered. Building something for the industry requires input from the industry.
Seriously, almost every restaurant owner I've ever spoken with has complained about the job boards they use.
Fingers crossed this doesn't trigger job board PTSD, but think about your current experience:
What are you doing manually that you wish your job board handled?
Do you rely on a separate app, spreadsheet, scheduler, or email system?
What's your biggest time suck?
Which feature is missing?
What's difficult to organize or track?
Do you wish you could do more from your phone besides make coffee?
What are you paying for that doesn't make hiring easier?
So, if I gave you three wishes:
What three things would you change about the job board you use?
Those are the wishes I want to know about.
The Mis en Place Job Board will continue evolving. What we've launched is a starting point, not the end of what we can build.
Hiring isn't static. Our recipe isn't either.
We're working to improve the experience for employers and job seekers and, in our own way, make the hospitality industry a better place to work.
Hiring remains a significant industry challenge. Toast's 2026 Voice of the Restaurant Industry Survey identified hiring as the second-most-cited challenge among the operators surveyed.
Your three wishes might be things we've already considered. They might be improvements we're working on. Or they might be ideas we haven't thought of yet.
That's exactly why I'm asking.
Tell me what would make hiring easier and what you wish your current job board did better.
Your feedback can help shape what we improve or build next.
Leave your three wishes here or email me directly at tonya@misenpl.com.
